Q: need advice on how to fix a rusted frame on a 69 mercury cougar?
ive looked at several times and seen that at some spots the frame as layers of rust in the frame . is this fixable ,replaceable or should i just sell it ?

A: A 69 Cougar doesn’t have a frame. It’s a unibody vehicle. Anything is fixable, by the right person, with the right equipment. Whether it is worthwhile, and how it would be done would require much more info than you have presented.

Q: Mercury Cougar 69 XR7 parts, anyone know where I can buy reproduction lexen dash gauge lens?
Looking for new repro parts for convertible Cougar 69, can’t find these gauge lens.

A: Try Cascade Classic Mercury Cougar Parts, Hemmings Motor News. They may have a Cougar part supply co. listed. Hope this helped.

Q: Basic Upgrades on my ‘69 Cougar?
I’ve got a ‘69 Mercury Cougar with a 302 Engine that I just bought off of someone. Everything in it is stock (Hubcaps, Interior, Etc.) And I’m just wondering, what basic upgrades (cosmetic or functional) can I make that will make the coug-nut look/run its best.

Anyone have any advice?

A: First let me drool on the screen here. LUCKY person. That was a great car. If you find you don’t like it, I’d be glad to take it off your hands!! LOL

My advice is simple. DO NOT CUSTOMIZE. You have a very rare (these days simply due to its age) collector’s car. Clean it up and keep everything as original as possible. They were good running cars from the factory and a good tuneup (I’d put in an electronic ignition set up that fits under the stock distributor cap to eliminate the points.) will make it purr. If you want an after market sound system, make sure you keep the old one for reinstalling if you ever decide to sell it to a collector. The same for more power. If it has the 2 barrel carb, you can pick up a 4 barrel with intake manifold and a set of headers and swap them as the mood hits you. (basic bolt on pre smog with the same linkage used for both if memory serves.) If it had stock dual exhaust, great. If not, you might get away with installing a factory type dual system, but a serious collector would spot that as not original equipment for that particular car. Don’t forget the tranny. Have it checked and preferably get the fluid/filters changed and get it adjusted.

Q: Can I fit 18X8 in rims on my 2000 Mercury cougar V6?
Here are the specs of the rims I am looking at and I want to know if they will fit on my car?
Description:
Finish: Painted/Machined
Size: 18 x 8 in.
Center Bore: 72.69 mm
Bolt Circle: 4-4.5 in.
Off Set: +40 mm

A: That guys answer is not necessarily true, i have a 2000 cougar, and i put 18’s on mine. No weight, just get low pro tires, they bolt is 4×108 on mine, i dunno if those will fit, sometimes at rim shops they look up a certain rim and say they fit your cougar, but ends up not fitting, i went to a store to put my rims on my car and i could only choose from 3 kinds of rims, its cause cougar are tuner cars, that sucks huh?

Q: what do i do for a car?
well im supposed to get my dads jeep cj-7 im really attached to the car but my problem is im not sure i really truthfully want a jeep and if i dont take it he’ll probably sell it. im really interested in this 69 mercury cougar for the same price and its really nice. i dont know what do you think?
also interested in this 72 plymouth duster twister thats a little nicer than the mercury

A: I have a 1969 Cougar myself. I don’t think I have seen a Duster that was nicer. Parts are not all that hard to find. Most of the running gear is the same as a Mustang. I would recommend one over the Jeep. The comment about it “crapping out” comes from one who is no mechanic and has no love of the classics.

Q: Where are the numbers on a Ford engine block that matches the VIN number.?
My girlfriends 67 Mercury Cougar is supposed to have a 4V 289 engine. The engine code says it’s a ‘68-’69 302, but I’ve heard for is notorious for using whatever is available. Usually there’s a code on the engine that matches the last five digits of the VIN number to tell is the engine originally came with the car. I don’t know where to find it on a FoMoCo engine, I usually deal with old Ponchos.

A: Those years the only thing I can tell you is
F in the vin means 302
H is 351
S is 500
A is 460

Q: Domestic Muscle vs Import Tuners Why and Why not?
Okay guys and gals this is for all of my var nuts out there. First and formost PLEASE do not start autobashing and bringing negative comments on my page, lets be adults about this.

Okay I’m a 29 year old Black male that was born into American Muscle by way of my father and uncles. My dad over time who owns his own body shop as collected several very popular muscle cars which are all in running condition because of the money he has put in them along with his mechanic know how lol! The list goes as thus alothough I can’t give the year of all of them but i’ll give some.
SS Nova 60’s
SS Monte Carlo 80’s
SS Impala Sport 64
Monte Carl two door coupe late 60’s
Ford Cobra 2
86 GT Mustang 302
89 GT Mustang
and the Big Baby that he will pass down to me in his will his favorite
Ford 69 Mach 1 Stroked

My dad even had a very nice green mercury cougar when the were popular and considered muscle cars, but as of now i’m really into the Imports, German and Japanese cars.

All of them are amazing in their own right as Sportscars and can do some amazing things with amazing looks to match. Today the American car companies still have some of the baddest street cars on the planet but are also lacking in some ares as well. I want a sportscar that can do it all but at a reasonable price, lets say under 60 grand. Most imports are better in handling than American cars and are alot more fun at the price range to push around the curves of a race track or curvy street.

So i’m posting this question to you all today
1. Which do you prefer Import Sportscars Tuned or Domestic Sportscars Tuned and why ? Explain without any bashing!

2. Do you prefer a Sportscar where it can do it all peform amazingly in a straitline as well as in the curves or only in a straitline?

3. If you built a Sportscar What make, Model will it be ? And will it be able to perfom on the Atlanta dragstrip or The Japanese Togue or Both?

Me Personally! I love my American Muscle as well as my European Exotics, and My Japanese speed deamons! I just love Sportscars!

A: My answers:

1. Which do you prefer Import Sportscars Tuned or Domestic Sportscars Tuned and why ? Explain without any bashing!

I grew up with Muscle cars. My dad was always working on his 64 Nova…I also grew up on Smokey and the Bandit….Mustangs, camaro, firebirds, GTOs, 57 Chevys…I love them all…But just as equally, I love my 96 Eclipse. I’ve been a huge fan of Mitsubishi since I first saw an 84 Starion. I love sport compact cars, heck I even like the Subaru WRX…

2. Do you prefer a Sportscar where it can do it all peform amazingly in a straitline as well as in the curves or only in a straitline?

I Prefer overall performance. A car needs to handle as well..otherwise any old box with wheels can have a huge engine and go from point a to point b with little excitment.

3. If you built a Sportscar What make, Model will it be ? And will it be able to perfom on the Atlanta dragstrip or The Japanese Togue or Both?

If I were to build a sports car now? I’d take the 09 Eclipse and throw in the Evo’s Turbo charged engine and AWD and remake the GSX for 2010. (Mitsubishi does have a prototype Eclipse Ralliart with a Evo engine and AWD)
